A bit of a problem with chests. [and a few other things about PVE]
I know there are a few threads complaining about the new chest system, however I'd like to put forthm some fresh constructive criticism.
Let's start at the top[or close to it] and take the shiverpeak chests. Currently Keys are going for 600 gold, and sell back for 300. Monsters which drop these keys are infrequent at best. Now, lets put the situation forth: I stumble across a SHC, I've got a key that was -dropped-. If I open the chest with this key, I am probably going to get an item which will be of little value to other players, 5%-10% says I might get something I can use or someone else, or I might be able to sell it back to the Merchants for a whopping 200 gold. This means I'm losing out on 100 gold by doing this little gamble and it's not worth my time. Inevitably this is going to lead to more farming. It seems that ANet is trying to eliminate this.
The solution
1) Make it worth the while of the players to play the game the way they want it to be played. Up the value of gold items. Say, 300 gold to start for a drok's area drop. People aren't going to be making massive amount of money on this, however they're not going to be losing for buying a key and feeling ripped off when nothing decent comes out over and over.
2) Make it so that bosses drop something for everyone. A decent item that rewards the players for teaming up and making it through. Make these drops better than what's in the chests or enough gold that it's actually worth while. 100-150 gold is a joke split among 8 people.
3) The missions are currently stagnant in regards to reward. I get 1 skill point (which I can get in ½ the time farming, and make more cash) and 1000 XP, 2000 if I do bonus as well. (again, farming, 168 x20 adds up VERY fast). How about when you do a mission, you get a financial reward too? Either a good platnum so we can actually use the skill point, and/or a nice item, random leveled loot would be nice. For example, a level 5 going through fort ranik mission would get some kind of purple-gold item, possibly a rune, however a level 20 going through the same mission would get a little bit of cash or a minor rune. When doing something like Ring of Fire, they'd get a nicer drop, like a gold sword or something. Also it would be nice if it were class determined; warrors get weapons and runes pertaining to them, Elementalists staves and runes of elementalists and so forth.
Thank you for listening.

I agree with parts of this. Chests are supposed to be a gamble, and as many people have yet to learn, the house always wins. Very few items from chests are worth more than 600 gold, but if you get a Superior Vigor or a Superior Absorption, you have made a lot of money. Even a Major Vigor will sell for more than 1,000 gold.
I do feel, however, that there should be some class-specific rewards that are worthwhile, whether from missions or quests. I play through a mission and end up with some swords and axes, but as a Ranger, I'm stuck trying to sell them to a player or to the NPC. A reliable source of weapons or runes would be nice, whether a difficult but repeatable quest, a mission reward, or something of the like.

I dunno about your luck. I've purchased 6 keys since the new update and I've made a profit overall. Just don't try to rape the people on price. Paid 600 for the key, sell the item for 1 plat, nearly a 100% profit and people will be very happy.

I wish perhaps that Anet could spec the chests for your character so if you are a ranger, you get bow drops/ranger runes etc, and a warrior you get weapons etc etc. Then perhaps i'd actually open a chest because something useful might come out of it...rather than getting say an awesome fire staff on my hammer warrior. Then I'll have to spend days (especially in this economy) trying to sell it to actually make a profit from the chest drop.
